At the conclusion of the Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Spinach harvest, when there were still an abundance of vegetation left on the lands it led Eric to the idea of establishing a livestock branch that could utilize the greenery left after the harvest.
Years ago, Eric purchased 980 Dohne-Merinos from an acquaintance in Bredasdorp but during the drought years he unfortunately had to sell them. When the decision was made in 2020 to establish the livestock branch on Elandsfontein he bought 100 ewes back from the same contact. All of them were pregnant resulting in a very fast expanding herd!
According to Eric “everything in life fits together like a puzzle.”
Presently a healthy herd of 1200 Dohne-Merinos roam the farm. On Elandsfontein the main objective for Dohne-merino breeding is primarily for their wool. Sheering starts in August when the first batch gets sheered at the age of eight months following with sheering the second batch at 12 months of age.
